Hi, I'm YoonSeok Baek.

I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Laboratoire Kastler Brossel in the group of Prof. Sylvain Gigan. I received my Ph.D. in Physics from KAIST under the supervision of Prof. YongKeun Park.

My research lies at the intersection of optical physics, microscopy, and computational imaging. I develop optical and computational methods to visualize microscopic systems under challenging conditions.

Research Interests

My research focuses on imaging methods guided by physical insights into how light is shaped and measured. I am particularly interested in how the structure of light, the measurement geometry, and the underlying physical model can be designed together to recover quantitative information and extend imaging capabilities beyond conventional settings.

Below are a few selected works that illustrate these directions.

Imaging and light control in scattering media

Light scattering scrambles optical information and limits imaging in many settings, from astronomy through atmospheric turbulence to deep-tissue microscopy.

I developed methods to reconstruct 3D images of fluorescent objects hidden behind strongly scattering media by retrieving optical field information that is normally inaccessible in scattered light. I also developed an approach to shape light onto hidden fluorescent targets, enabling controlled light delivery in scattering environments.

Phase imaging beyond conventional interferometry

Optical phase carries rich structural information about transparent samples, but accurate phase measurement often requires interferometric setups or complex reconstruction procedures.

I developed Kramers–Kronig holographic imaging, a framework that analytically retrieves phase-delay images directly from intensity measurements. This enables accurate phase imaging without an interferometric setup. The same principle can be used within interferometric imaging to overcome the space–bandwidth product bottleneck, enabling phase imaging over a larger field of view or with higher spatial detail.
